Kutschem – (Thank you) for stopping by the Kekuli Cafe website. You have now entered the Okanagan Nation’s territory. Thank you to the Okanagan Nation and Westbank First Nation for being so inviting to this land.

Welcome to the Kekuli Café and Catering Co. The Kekuli Café was founded in 2005, and is an Aboriginal owned business by Sharon Bond. We look forward to serving you great, homemade style food. Quality of food is number one at the Kekuli Café, as this is our mission. The only way to achieve this is by the freshness of ingredients. And always remember, “ Don’t Panic! We have Bannock!”

Bannock 101

Bannock Cafe

I do get that question many, many times… what is Bannock? No, it’s not another country like Bangkok.... it is a bread that has been adopted by the First Nation people as part of their culture. Bannock originally came from the Scottish people, believe it or not.

Bannock is also known as “Fry bread”, which is an expression of our culture. Food is an expression of all cultures. Food brings us together to share in celebrations, gatherings and feasts across Turtle Island (North America).

Bannock is a simple bread. In pre-contact times, Aboriginal people made Bannock with ingredients on hand. They would make it with the roots from turnips or corn, crushed sunflower seeds, natural leavening agents and a sweet syrup made from the sap of trees. Today we make it with flour, sugar/honey, baking powder or yeast with milk or water, to name a few.
